“If I didn't define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people's fantasies for me and eaten alive.”
--Audre Lorde

“It turns out that America is peopled chiefly by folks trying to figure out what’s happening in America.” --Noel Peattie, Sipapu 1:2

  • Issues of Sipapu; always a pleasure.
  • As my life involves more writing now than it ever has before, it makes me think about how I have been trained (as an artist--in another life). I visualize myself as a sculptor when I write. I start off with this big, vast slab of the white page and I get into all of the details--the nooks and crannies--as I go. What began as a brick gets sanded away into the rougher shapes of the form, and then eventually you can step back and someone else will exclaim "Oh! I see it! It's an eye!"
I think about how the skills of observation, logic and communication are all in there, even if my brushes or my hands really aren't.
